Yesterday saw our partner WORD organise a Carers Day for the first time in Laxmipur block of Koraput District, Odisha state in India. It was attended by well over 340 carers, the people they care for and notable dignitaries. It was a momentous day, noting the progress of our work in the local community in the past year.
Fun games including musical chairs and traditional dance engaged carers and their family members. Dr. Racheal Raykumari, Executive Secretary of WORD commented that she has never seen carers so happy. Pointing out that for many of the people taking part, this would be the first time they had relaxed, had fun and temporarily forgot their worries.
Mr Kailash Chandra Kulesika – Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Laxmipur commenced proceedings with an awareness raising rally taking place on the main high street. WORD staff and carers distributed leaflets to the general public, explaining the important role that carers play in their communities and highlighting the impact that caring has on their lives. The event concluded with speeches from local dignitaries, marking the first time in history that government representatives have acknowledged carers issues, heard their concerns and expressed an understanding of the impact of caring on their health and well-being.
The achievements of the entire WORD team exceeded everyone’s expectations. Under the leadership of Dr. Racheal Raykumari, we are confident that this event will go from strength to strength in the annual calendar of community events in Laxmipur block.
Following a presentation of the work of Carers Worldwide and WORD, we were delighted to hear that elected representatives and the government officials increasingly recognised the significant role carers play and were committed to making positive change in their lives. We look forward to witnessing its development over the coming years.
