Opening the door of opportunity for carers in Nepal

#HumansCare – Bhabana’s story

Bhabana helps care for her brother Bhabindra who has bipolar disorder. He is a very talented goldsmith who previously worked with his father to earn money to support the family.  After Bhabindra became unwell, the family have struggled financially and emotionally.  They sometimes get angry with Bhabindra, not understanding that he can’t control what is happening to him.

The family are keen for Bhabana to marry, but she knows this is not possible as she is committed to caring for her brother. She loves Bhabindra and worries about his future. Bhabana genuinely doesn’t know what will happen to him, or the rest of her family if she leaves.

With the financial burden on the family increasing, the cost of her brothers medicine was more than they could afford. With no employment skills and no idea where to look, Bhabana set out to find work.  Feeling overwhelmed and unsure about the future, Bhabana was relieved when she was introduced to the work of Carers Worldwide.

She joined a carers group and began to feel hopeful that she could find a pathway in to employment. In a short space of time, Bhabana was able to buy a sewing machine with a livelihoods loan.  She also received training and support to build her confidence and secured an apprenticeship with a local tailor where she is paid for her work.

Perhaps most importantly, Bhabana now feels less worried about her brother. She knows she can help with his care in the long-term and with her earnings they can now afford to buy the medication he needs.
