This project is strengthening our network of Carers Groups across the South Asia region and driving forward our work with policymakers to achieve long-term change for carers and their families.
Specifically, we will:
- Plan and deliver training to the government network of rehabilitation workers at panchayat and district level across Karnataka state (south India)
- Continue our focussed lobbying of the Government of Karnataka at the state level
The outcomes of this project will be:
- 200 government rehabilitation workers equipped to facilitate panchayat-level Carers Groups
- Promotion of 1,500 Carers Groups involving approximately 15,000 unpaid carers
- Reduced isolation of unpaid carers and increased access to information, advice and support
- Linking 500 to 750 eligible carers with the National Rural Livelihood Mission (a government poverty alleviation scheme focussed on the rural poor)
- Facilitate access to the government’s new Carers Allowance (for those carers who meet the current eligibility criteria: estimated to be 3 – 4,000 carers)
- Lobbying of the state government, focussing on widening the eligibility criteria for the Carers Allowance.

This project is providing support for 170 unpaid carers over three years, to set up new livelihood initiatives to help lift their families out of poverty. It has also established a revolving fund which other carers can continue to access into the future to help them set up their own livelihood initiatives.
The project also includes training up to 1,500 unpaid carers in advocacy skills, ensuring they know and understand their rights and giving them the confidence to ask for what they need and deserve.
