Our work in India involves 12 partners across 5 states.

We’re working with Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra (NBJK), SACRED, SAMUHA, EKTA, SPREAD, WORD, Margardashi, the Narendra Foundation, BIRDS, Uma Educational and Technical Society (UETS), the Shristi Special Academy and Vasantham Federation across five states in India: Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha and Tamil Nadu.

This project will provide support for 170 unpaid carers to set up new livelihood initiatives to help lift their families out of poverty. It will also establish a revolving fund which other carers will be able to continue to access into the future to help them set up their own livelihood initiatives.

This project will train 150 carers to establish enterprises that will generate an income and they will receive loans to enable them to establish their enterprise. The project will also create the legacy of a revolving fund that will support many more carers in this way in the future.
As part of the project, carer representatives will be trained on how to manage this revolving fund, as well as on leadership and advocacy and they will be enabled to advocate for carers’ rights and provision of government support.

We are working to reduce feelings of isolation in carers and improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing, as well as increase their confidence in their advocacy skills. We are also working to improve the mental health of those with mental illness.

This is our first project taking place in an urban setting in India. With our partner SSA we will be working with 70 disabled children, their mothers and siblings.
Our project will:
  • improve educational and social outcomes via innovative and online specialist teaching
  • improve the emotional wellbeing of mothers through carer support groups
  • re-integrate siblings into their local schools and thereby improve their educational and social opportunities
  • promote sustainable livelihood opportunities for mothers that can take place alongside their caring responsibilities, thereby increasing household income

Focussing on the advocacy aspect of the Carers Worldwide model, this project will raise awareness of carers, gain recognition of their critical role and achieve the support carers require for their health, economic and social wellbeing.
400 carers of people with disabilities will be directly impacted, specifically through:
  • Capacity strengthening of BIRDS staff and local government rehabilitation and early intervention workers
  • Promotion of 5 block and 1 district level Carers Association
  • Participation in Carers Worldwide’s new divisional level carers forum

This project is working with 500 carers of children and adults with severe disabilities in a tripartite arrangement between the Narendra Foundation, Carers Worldwide and government volunteers.
With a specific focus on:
  • building the capacity of local rehabilitation workers
  • establishing carer support groups to provide information, advice and emotional support
  • enabling carers and their families to access existing government support

This project is working with 1,100 people with mental illness and epilepsy and their carers across the two blocks of Lakshmipur and Narayanpatna, with a specific focus on:
  • improving access to mental health services and treatment
  • supporting the mental health of carers
  • raising awareness of issues around mental health and caring
  • establishing sustainable links between carers and local health authorities
  • strengthening the capacity of staff and carers
  • improving livelihoods options and income levels for people with mental illness and epilepsy and their carers
In addition, all the families were supported with emergency food provision, supply of vital medicines and mental health support during the height of the COVID pandemic.

This project has seen the Carers Worldwide Model implemented with 3,300 people with mental illness and epilepsy (PWMIE) and their carers, with a specific focus on building up the skills of partner staff, raising awareness of the issues that unpaid carers face and identifying people with mental illness and epilepsy and organising mental health camps to provide treatment and support for newly identified cases.

This project is the first project between ourselves and Margadarshi and is working with 1,123 carers across five taluks of Chamarajnagar district.
Carers have been organised into 109 carers groups, supported by 5 block level federations. Carers are being linked to existing government schemes and programmes for livelihoods, health and education support for their children, and will be able to access welfare entitlements for those they care for. 25 carers trained by the project in barefoot counselling are providing mental health support to carers.
