The Christmas Challenge runs from midday on Tuesday 30th November to midday on Tuesday 7th December. Our Campaign for this year’s Christmas Challenge is Restoring Lives and Livelihoods for Carers.

Family carers and their vulnerable sick and disabled relatives have been hard hit by COVID-19. Your support will help rebuild their lives and livelihoods by finding ways for them to earn a sustainable income, reduce their isolation and take their place in their local communities.

The Situation

The challenges of caring are a global phenomenon but carers in low- and middle-income countries are particularly hard hit. Many are unable to work to earn an income because of their caring responsibilities and lack of support. Families are living in poverty as a result. COVID19 has exacerbated this, and many do not know where the next few meals will come from. Often disabled children are not accepted in their local school and mothers have no respite from caring to be able to go out to work.

Our Solution

We work with our local NGO partners in Bangladesh, India and Nepal to promote ways of earning an income that can co-exist with caring responsibilities. Family carers are trained in a new livelihood which fits in with their caring responsibilities, interests them and will be a long term source of income. They are helped to set up in that new livelihood, given business advice and ongoing mentoring. They join a local carers group for support and can access community caring facilities set up by our partners.

Through Restoring Lives and Livelihoods for Carers, we will:

  • Work with local schools and NGOs to promote inclusion of disabled children and the provision of high quality community caring facilities
  • Raise awareness amongst local government officials and other charities to facilitate the inclusion of carers into mainstream income generation schemes and programmes
  • Provide grants to carers to help them establish and succeed in their new livelihood
  • Train carers in new livelihoods that will mean they can earn an income immediately and into the future
  • Identify carers in the communities we work in and offer them practical support and opportunities to meet with other carers

One act of kindness this Christmas will go a long way to helping transform the lives of unpaid family carers in South Asia. Please help us to restore lives and livelihoods for family carers by donating to our campaign.
