Jo Whiley Presents our

BBC Radio 4 Appeal

Don’t miss our BBC Radio 4 Appeal which airs on Sunday 31 May at 7:54am, and will be repeated that evening at 9:25pm and again on Thursday 4 June at 3:27pm.

Broadcaster Jo Whiley presents our appeal, which focuses on the story of Mukta. Mukta is from Bangladesh and cares for her brother Al-Amin who has spina bifida.

Growing Up Caring:
Jo and Mukta’s Story

Jo was three years old when her sister Frances was born with Cri du Chat syndrome, a genetic condition that causes significant disabilities. Growing up with Frances brought highs and lows for Jo that were unique and difficult for others to understand. Even as a child she felt a great responsibility to care for her.

Like Jo, Mukta also grew up with this feeling of responsibility for her little brother, and she played a big part in caring for him, washing and dressing him and carrying him everywhere because he couldn’t walk. Her friends didn’t understand what she was going through and she felt very isolated.

Then she found out about our Carers Project run by our local charity partner in Bangladesh, Centre for Disability in Development (CDD), and she joined her local Carers Group where she met other people who understood.

Tune in to BBC Radio 4 on Sunday 31 May at 7:54am to hear Jo tell Mukta’s story and explain the impact our Carers Group has had on her life. Our appeal will also air at 9:25pm that same day, and again on Thursday 4 June at 3:27pm, and you’ll be able to listen anytime on BBC Sounds.

The chance to share Mukta’s story through a BBC Radio 4 Appeal is a big one for a small charity like ours and we are delighted to have Jo Whiley present it for us. Jo has direct experience of what it’s like to grow up caring for a sibling and so our appeal, and Mukta’s story, is close to her heart.

We would be extremely grateful for any donations received, which will be used to help us support more carers like Mukta. And thanks to our supporter, Hallmark Foundation, the first £2,500 of donations to our appeal will be matched, meaning a £25 donation could become £50 or a £75 donation could become £150, helping your impact go even further.

Please be aware though, that donations made through the BBC only come to us if made in the week of the appeal, from Sunday 31 May to Saturday 6 June. If you would like to give directly, you can do so through the form below.

“The reason I’m supporting Carers Worldwide is because I know how overlooked carers can be, how neglected they may feel and how vital the work they do is. The work that Carers Worldwide do, and your contribution, is literally life changing.”
